Ticklish

Shelley Norton's installation, Ticklish, features rings made from discarded plastic wrappings which transform the discarded and undesired into the desired. The general concept that underpins my work is the notion of meaning and how we construct it. Manufacturing meaning is a fascinating business. In trying to comprehend the absurdity of human existence, we construct stories that both define and constrain us in what can be jigsaw like precision. Jewellery with its serious games of signification around wealth and status provides a huge area in which to start questioning and opening up paraspaces from which to examine these myths. Homely knitting and plastic bags are not historically associated with jewellery. Shredded and knitted the discarded container becomes the object, a ticklish place from which to play the game of jewellery.This installation was part of a series of window displays called ChocolateBox.
