The Ring Project
26 October 2004 - 11 December 2004
"In 2003 I completed a Creative New Zealand Craft/Object Residency at the Grey Street Workshop in Adelaide. The Ring Project developed from my investigations begun at that time and an intentional work in progress. On my return to Auckland I re-viewed my local environment as a resource, selecting from the beach worn fragments of Waitemata papa, weathered pohutakawa and man-made remnants for intervention and transformation, reassessing the banal. Made from structures and materials susceptible to wear and tear, the rings I propose are as vulnerable as the relationships they so often represent. Care must be taken, as unlike the timeless durability of the convention of gold and diamonds, the impermanence and flux of the materials of the Waitemata shoreline is a reminder of the fragility of our emotions and interactions."
