Left at the Members Lounge
10 August 2004 - 25 September 2004
The exhibition's title refers to the notion of a 'members lounge', the lounge or space inhabited by established object makers who have provided both a foundation, and in some cases, an education for the current younger generation of object makers. Left at the Members Lounge reflects on aspects of the 'members lounge' by considering the practice of new makers, their relationship to the traditions of the 'members lounge' and the manner in which they have taken a step leftward and forged new directions in field of object-making. Left at the Members Lounge features works by Steve Carr, Octavia Cook, Jim Dennison & Leanne Williams, Megan Hansen-Knarhoi, Glen Hayward, Gregor Kregar, Mark Mitchell, Shelley Norton, John Roy and Harry Watson. These are makers, who within their creative practice, are reconsidering ideas of tradition, function, process, materiality and value. Left at the Members Lounge has been curated for Objectspace by Lucy Hammonds, Rachel Gibbons and Sean Duxfield with the assistance of Bronwyn Fletcher. "Our intention for this exhibition is to challenge audiences to consider the way in which they think about objects. There are indications among the works, of future directions for objectmaking, as well as reflections of its origins and traditions. The feeling that is most pervasive however is strength, questioning and intellect which guarantee a rich and continuing dialogue about the role that the object plays within New Zealand art." Left at the Members Lounge is the first exhibition curated for Objectspace's new centre and Objectspace is delighted that the project provocatively considers the past, present and future of objectmaking. Objectspace wishes to acknowledge the assistance of The Lou and Iris Fisher Charitable Trust.
