Using sharp scissors, scalpels, knives, and paper – Rood investigates intersections between art and science in the developing arena of genetic research and engineering; mapping out and manipulating what could be the magnification of various cellular structures.
By cutting away into each individual sheet of paper, what emerges is a complex play of shadow and light – negative and positive space. As the layers multiply, parts move together and combine in depth, complexity and fragility, the resultant work resembles the paper-thin organic quality of skin – referencing the human body.
