House-Hat Parade for Auckland

Event / 17 September 2016

Saturday 17 September, 1pm - 3pm
Studio One Toi Tu, 1 Ponsonby Rd.

When people go through a street wearing high hats, the architectural appearance of the city is changed.

—Hundertwasser

The society of rooms is the place where it is good to learn, good to live, good to work.

The street is a community room.

—Louis Kahn

Join Xin Cheng and Chris Berthelsen for a child centered workshop for all ages. Bring along an idea (or, find one here) and join us in making a parade of house-hats. Using recycled materials, participants will create wearable garments which playfully reference architectural structures and the world around us.

Xin Cheng and Chris Berthelsen are researchers and artist/designers who focus on living with limited resources, hand-made technologies, and informal use of public space. Since meeting in 2014 they have worked on participatory installations and public engagements using local resources and re-purposed waste materials. They have been commissioned by Auckland Council to design a public park in Manukau, and recently returned from Japan running workshops around Tokyo as part of a research and doing tour on the theme of 'shelter crisis'. They are part of the TEMP climate change project, and ran a children’s shelter building workshop at Corban Estate Arts Centre in July.
